BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BARANGAY

NAME AND IDENTITY

This barrio before was only a sitio which name was “may tangid”. After several years had passed this sitio was inhabited by so many people whose identities were unknown. When it was thickly populated, the people organized this place into a barrio. The origin of this barrio was unknown to the people due to so many years had passed. This was established sometime in 1906 when the people from this place had formed their leaders. The founder was not known. According to the information, the location of this place is the present cemetery. There were so many early inhabitants of this place, but only a few were gathered due to unavailability of an informant to give the names of the others. They are as follows:

THE SPANISH PERIOD

The people were not yet organized.

PHILIPPINE REVOLUTION

The people were still unaware of the revolution. They were frightened when another group of unfamiliar people came. That is why they did not have any participation in the revolution.

AMERICAN PERIOD

During the war against the Americans, the people from this place evacuated to the forest because they were so afraid of the foreigners. The people in this place they did not join the war against the Americans. The historical events and social progress of the place slow because of the people not being educated. For political events, the place is still under the government of the Poblacion. In terms of the way of living, the people became busy in “bayong-making” and planting of root crops like cassava and camote. Their products were brought to the town of Calabanga by means of boating or sailing, and there, they would barter with palay or other kind commodities. Social progress of the barangay was unnoticeable until it become well-organized. Then the church was established. After which, the school  was built in 1921. The said institution was built to address the needs of the increasing numbers of children who were uneducated. The ordinances and laws that govern the locality were not yet clear to the people.

Some prominent people who were appointed as lieutenants made great impact in the improvement of the barangay. They were: Tomas Villarin, Alejandro Aῆiete, Alejandro Agsamosam, and Francisco Delos Reyes.

JAPANESE REGIME

Just like the previous scenario, the residents, moved to the forest to evade the Japanese. Although, there was not much of the effect to the barangay, the only thing that the Japanese pushed through was the knowledge about their language which is Niponggo.

The guerilla organization was organized immediately in the place. All men were automatically became members of the movement. The leaders were Captain Doroteo Padua and Salvador Nieves who overthrown the Japanese in Nagpatong, a sitio along the coast near the barangay. When this happened, the economic condition was static. The catholic religion was also established.

THE LIBERATION

During the liberation, there were little amount of changes that occurred because the people were already organized. In addition to the developments, some festivities were already celebrated such as the National Independence Day. In accordance to the systematized state government, the first official to lead the community was also proclaimed. And he was Mr. Calixto E. Delos Reyes who reigned for nine consecutive years. The improvements in different areas were evident most especially in education. Some of the children in the barangay were sent to the city to study. The Catholicism remained strong as the primary religion.

THE PEOPLE IN GENERAL

The people have different ways of living. Hospitality and generosity were reflected in most of them. Gambling is the worst enemy in our lives but the people there found it as a recreational activity. In general, people in the barrio have learned to cope with the changes brought by time.
