BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BARANGAY

Mananao means overlooking, a place overlooking the San Miguel Bay, six (6) kilometers away from the town proper of Tinambac, Camarines Sur. It is bounded by Cawayan River on the east, Catigsan River on the west, on the north is swampy area and on the south is the mountainous part nearby barangay Canayona. It has a land area of 15,359.5 hectares. Background: towards the end of eighteenth century, this mountainous and hilly place was occupied by Julian San Andres and his clan. His son Julian was married to Gregoria Donacao. His two daughters were married to Emmanuel Diaz and Cesar Abelinde, another on Amos was born to his second wife and Cristina to his third wife.

Among early inhabitants were Jose Donacao, Cipriano San Andres, Fortunato Tandog, Rufino Villareal and certain Abelligos. They occupied the flat area one kilometer away from the swamp area. Julian San Andres become influential and through his leadership they named this place “MANANAO” which means overlooking the San Miguel Bay. They build a small chapel and adopted St. Roque as their Patron Saint wherein they celebrate their fiesta every 15th-16th of August, yearly.

Many adventurous people from Sto. Domingo and Bagacay, Albay migrated, Belista and Belo family. They occupied the upper portion of this place. Their way of living is through abaca stripping, kaingin, planting rice and root crops. The lower part of the barrio was occupied by the San Andres clan. The different sitios were occupied by the different families like: Sitio Bariis, it was occupied by the Delos Santos Family, sitio Kitakas by San Buenaventura family.

During the Japanese time, the inhabitants vacated this place in fear with the Japanese. After the war the inhabitants no longer return to the “Besita” or the upper part of the place, instead they build their houses along the road. They build their new community with new chapel, the school was opened and infrastructure started transforming this barangay to a more advance community. And the inhabitants source of living depends on agriculture and small fishing.

In the year 1949 the Mananao Elementary School was established situated at Sitio Bariis it has a complete year level, it is .5 km away from the main road. Because of this situation some concerned citizen of this barangay together with the school management finds way to look for a new site. At present, Mananao Elementary School was transferred to its  new site at Sitio Cawayan just along the National road. It was easier now for both the teachers and student as well as the parents in going to school. The school has 13 teachers and 380 enrolled yearly.

Based on the latest survey our barangay has 362 household and 1,772 inhabitants, its land area is 15,359.5 has. Composed of Sitio Bariis, Maylubas, Cawayan, Pariaus Sitio Pangi and 7 zones  at the barangay proper.
